This was to be the great epic statement by the young Italian director generally considered to be the greatest since Fellini; the director who made "The Conformist" before he was 30, and whose " Last Tango in Paris " was hailed by Pauline Kael as the most important artistic event since Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring.

And he blew it. I remember the excitement before the world premiere of "" at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Tickets and passes were being traded on an impromptu black market, and the crush at the first morning screening was so savage that one man was pushed through a plate-glass door.

The atmosphere was totally different by the end of the afternoon, after the dual press screenings for both halves of the then minute film.

People were quiet and puzzled and dismayed: How had Bertolucci gone so wrong? The case for "" has become something of a cause in the 18 months since that disastrous premiere.

The film's producer, Alberto Grimaldi , had worked with Fellini, Visconti and Pontecorvo and knew a thing or two about movies that ran over budget and length.

He'd gambled with Bertolucci, and now he had this enormously expensive and virtually unmarketable film on his hands. He prepared one shorter version, Bertolucci stood by the original version, and until Bertolucci finally made his own shorter minute cut, it almost seemed as if "" would never be seen at all.

I hate to say it, but maybe that would have been a blessing: The movie could have gone into film history as a great lost classic, and Grimaldi could have been branded the villian, and Bertolucci could have gone on to his next film as, indeed, he has.

Because "" is a film out of control. A film conceived on such an epic scale that it just doesn't fit. A film in which Bertolucci struggles for hours to make his statement about the class struggle in Italy only to end on a note of throwaway goofiness.

The movie begins on the day of Verdi's death for no particular reason, I'm afraid. It records the births of boys in two families -- one to a rich landowning family, the other to peasants living on their land.

The boys grow up together as playmates, and there's a Huckleberry Finn sort of charm to the scenes in which they trap frogs and dare each other to lay down on the tracks while a train thunders overhead.

But the movie has decades to cover and can't linger to get us deeply involved. Their fathers Burt Lancaster and Sterling Hayden , respectively die, and so the young men become heirs to the ancient customs and feuds of the region.

Mussolini is on the rise, and the town's leading fascist blackshirt Donald Sutherland works for De Niro and persecutes the local Communists including Depardieu.

And then De Niro marries a beautiful young woman Dominique Sanda , and Sutherland murders a child on the wedding day and tries to pin the blame on Depardieu.

And Bertolucci's camera, always moving, swooping, gliding effortlessly from one stunning composition to another, hardly seems to stop to see these events: It's as if the movie has a beauty apart from its content, and Bertolucci dazzles us visually as an apology for the narrative mess he's in.

There are scenes you will remember and, yes, "," for all its problems, is a movie that film buffs should see.

In the final hour I was getting incredibly agitated and felt the story was deliberately dragging on for the sake of it. When the credits finally rolled I felt cheated and very unsatisfied.

Despite these heavy flaws, there are things that make the film slightly worth watching. First of all are the decent performances turned in by most of the cast.

DeNiro, Deprardieu, Sutherland and most of the others are fine with Sutherland making his character an incredibly evil and unlikable person. DeNiro was the main actor who attracted me to this film and it seems to be a largely forgotten role of his.

Although its not one of his best performances he really is brave and committed here as he features in two pornographic sequences that I can't imagine too many well-known actors are willing to engage in.

The best aspect of the film is the Vittorio Stanto's wonderful Cinematography that makes the most of the Italian countryside and many other wonderful landscapes.

Ennio Morricone's score is fairly good also. Several scenes work well, but unfortunately I was put off by the sheer amount of pointless ones that made the film as long as it was.

I would recommend seeing this film only for the performances and cinematography. I would also recommend finding a much shorter cut because I believe it may be much better if it was between 2 and 3 hours or even less.

I will gladly watch any foreign movie in any language with subtitles, even when I do not know the original language at all.

At least give us the option of having an Italian version with English subtitles? I realized my mistake in purchasing the digital dubbed version after I started watching, so I could not cancel my purchase.

My error, I know. It has it's faults, but Bertolucci made a true work of art again after his triumph with the equally phenoomenal Last Tango in Paris and his heartbreaking "loss of innocence" story The Dreamers.

I saw it on video and it was what it was for that time. But to see it on dvd The English dubbing is very well done in sound and as close as Bertolucci got to perfect quality.

I was impressed. The sound is a thousand times better, especially the music. Try, if you can, to see this on a flat screen tv with great speakers and you will love the music, makes it a better experience than on a PC.

Bertolucci has always been as true as he can be to his art, no holding back, so be prepared, as always for violence and nudity.

It's less shocking to me because so much time has gone by No, actually two. And that is beautiful. She could give Charlotte Rampling a run for her money.

The scene stealers here are Donald Sutherland and Laura Betti as the evil - fascists- who lose their minds completely villains.

They're so good at their roles it's almost unbearable to watch them. I wonder if he could have cut an hour out and it still could have worked.
