She is not like able, all she does is steamroll every episode and scene. Tyler M. Aug 13, It can be said about The Flash's fourth season that it is consistently entertaining in spite of being the least technically accomplished of the show's seasons.

The plotting is arbitrary and depends too much on preposterous character choices although nothing here is as outrageous as Zoom being able to kidnap and kill Barry's father in the second season.

The acting is over-the-top even by the show's own standards. The dialogue, oversaturated and oversimplified in earlier seasons, starts off in this season as oddly flat and uninteresting.

The freshness of the earlier seasons has gone. But fragments of entertainment combine to form an engaging superhero universe with characters we place inherent interest in.

There is enough sympathy in characters like the Flash Grant Gustin and Harrison Wells Tom Cavanagh that we are forgiving even when the latter is demoted to comic relief or neurotic, irate outbursts.

But because Cavanagh inhabits a character whom he was demonstrated has intrinsic interest, we don't mind the overacting. This time, he plays Wells from Earth-2, the same Wells who was a regular in Season 2.

Both his daughter--as well as Joe's son, Wally, are mostly gone this season, and so Wells has less obvious motivations than before.

He is joined by his wife Marlize Kim Engelbrecht. The difference this time is that DeVoe's existence and threat was warned in the previous season by another villain, Savitar.

You would think this would have given Team Flash at least a temporary advantage, but DeVoe outmaneuvers them at every turn.

DeVoe, oddly enough, is the first main antagonist not to be a speedster, which finally answers my question as to why so many bad guys happen to be speedsters.

We see him in his lair early on, lecturing on the ineffectiveness of humanity and Team Flash, of the eventual triumph of his plans to educate the world according to his desires.

Flashbacks between him and his wife give what could have been a dull and inhuman character depth and a semblance of humanity, though some of the dialogue they exchange about technology and mankind could be easily categorized as melodramatic.

There is an additional supporting character to Team Flash this season: Ralph Dibny, a sleazy PI who was once a corrupt cop that fabricated evidence to catch a criminal.

Dibny unexpectedly receives superpowers that give him the ability to stretch and contort his body in incredible ways, not least of all shapeshifting into other people.

Dibny is forced to join Team Flash when DeVoe starts hunting him down. He is the subject of criticism by the morally righteous Barry but Dibny is quick to point out how the Flash has broken laws to get the job done.

Give Dibny credit, because he kind of has a good point. Because of his powers, he becomes a superhero fighting alongside the Flash.

The pacing and setup of "Season 4" is much like the second season, in which an omnipotent villain defeats the heroes again and again and again.

Mix that with some stand-alone episodes and you got yourself a show. Some of the results are the same, and the problem with both this season and the second is that the greatly intensifying stakes evokes a lot of anxiety and frustration but no much suspense, frankly.

And although DeVoe is frequently an engaging villain, it gets tiring after he beats the heroes on multiple occasions and arrogantly gloats of his superiority.

Of all the fatal flaws that Team Flash could have exploited, it's curious they never think to use his arrogance against him. There are some episodes that deserve special recognition.

The best episode may be the one in which DeVoe frames Barry for a crime and the latter must find a legal way to avoid lifetime imprisonment.

Another of relatively the same quality involves ecoterrorists who detonate a nuclear weapon, and Barry has to work within billionths of a second to stop the explosion from reaching the city.

These are inventive and effective episodes with an emotional backbone. They deserve to be mentioned among the series's best. This season may be a bit too goofy and too outside reasonable storytelling for even hardcore fans to appreciate, and perhaps if I had been in a more cynical mood, my attitude would not be as flattering.

Steve D. Jul 14, Spoilers below Everyone is way too harsh on this season, and not harsh enough on season 3. Devoe was a far better villain than Savitar.

Savitar's plan was killing iris which was really boring whereas Devoe had a 3 year plan that involved stealing meta powers in order to reboot every human being into a simplified state, which I thought was a master plan that was very intriguing because his reasons behind it were understood.

Devoe in my opinion was the second most powerful villain Barry has faced only behind reverse-flash who can't die.

Season 4 was also really light-hearted and funny, which I preferred over the abundant darkness and anger in season 3.
