As to why this choice of casting bothered me I am not sure, other than the lack of courage of the director and writers to insist on actors who would better play those roles.
This is a well acted film, and enjoyable to watch as a whole. Even the characters you disliked were well played by the cast. So I would recommend this movie, with the caveat to just keep an open mind to the movie and the story and what the message of it was.
If there is one you can gleam from it. As much as I can appreciate the attempt at this story-line and Amazon's effort to provide films that address LGBT topics, it was the casting that absolutely destroyed this piece.

I had no idea how this movie would have played out. This is the story of a guy, Ray Saxx, who gets busted for a weekend gone to he A rockstar at Ray's OD's and Ray is locked up.
The LT in charge grabs Ray at in processing to put in his ward - the transvestites. By no means does Ray belong.
The story is the story of the people there and an ultimate paycheck from one of the inmates against the sadistic LT. Spoiler Alert!
That being said, Kate Del Castillo and Portia Doubleday did pretty good in their roles, and actually felt they were pretty convincing when they dropped their voices a few octaves at certain points.
Almost makes you feel like you're about to experience something like the Conjuring or a psychological thriller, but then it backs away. Had the movie stayed the course, def would've given 5 stars without a doubt.

After being raped by Detroit twice, Butterfly brutally murders him with a pair of razor blades and the other inmates help her to hide the weapons and they claim not to have witnessed the incident.
Saxx is told that he is being charged with the murder of his associate, songwriter Ian Sheffield, who happened to be having an affair with Saxx's wife.
If Saxx does not agree, his wife will testify that the death was a murder; if he does sign, she will tell police the death was an accident.
Saxx signs the documents, knowing he will be released soon. He makes a deal with Mousey to get back at the corrupt Lt.
Johnson before he leaves: Mousey has sex with Johnson and then files rape charges against him. After prison officers discover Johnson having sex with Mousey, Johnson is charged with rape and the murder of Detroit before being taken into custody and put in a cell next to Ben, who implies Johnson will be punished by other inmates.
